Uncle Tan
There could be countless stories behind one family business. In this project, studiomateriality visually unfolds a family tale revolving around the myth of Uncle Tan. Two Greek nieces pay tribute to their Singaporean uncle, making Uncle Tan’s Drinking House a love letter to its Asian legacy. Delicate branding and interior design touches make it a go-to-bar for today’s customers. The bar is located at Marina Zeas, next to the harbor, a perfect match for a street style set-up. Color wise, studiomateriality used the anticipated red, but went for a youthful spin by adding tints of green, blue, purple and yellow mainly through lighting. Two mysteriously quirky rooms, one with multiple aquariums and another one with an arcade claw machine reference back to Uncle’s origins, and spark the visitor’s excitement. The Subway-ish typography sends subtle hints of Tan’s humble roots. An illustration of Tan himself is what brings the branding to life. The supportive image of the dragon symbolizes health and luck both for the owners and everyone who might choose Uncle Tan’s for their night outing.
Grab a sit, get a drink and let’s celebrate Tan’s legacy together.
